Did you know that October is Adopt a Shelter Pet month?! I mean really at this point they have a holiday for anything. Random Act of Kindness Day (February 17), Best Friend’s Day (June 8), Guacamole Day (September 16), even a Chocolate Cupcake Day (October 18). But this is a cause I can get behind.
In March of 2015 I adopted my dog Sadie. She is a terrier mix-8 pounds of trouble-snaggle tooth love bug. In early 2015 I really wanted a dog. At first I did look at a breeder for a Miniature Dachshund. But after thinking about it I started looking at my local shelters and rescue organizations for a puppy. Breeders will always find homes for their purebred dogs, but a lot of shelter dogs never find their forever homes.
I just happened to check the County shelter’s website and saw Sadie’s profile. The next day my boyfriend and I went to the shelter to see if she was still available. When her foster mom brought her out, our hearts immediately fell in love. I mean who could resist her little monkey face!
She was 10 weeks and just over 2 pounds. They brought us into a separate room so we could try and play with her and get a sense of her personality. I’ll never forget how cute she was hopping around! My boyfriend and I pretended to have an adult conversation about the responsibilities of having a dog, but we both knew we would be taking her home. Next stop the pet store to get all the necessary items!
She really is the best little friend. Dogs usually are. They are the most loyal companions. She always wants to play but is always down to snuggle.
If you are thinking about getting a dog, cat, or other small animal- please consider checking out your local shelters! Adopt don’t shop.
